Popcorn is my favorite snack. I can eat it everyday, twice a day. Years ago I was frightened by some of the reports I heard about microwave popcorn and chemicals used to make it. Not knowing what to believe I decided to make my own. I made it the old fashioned way, or at least the way my grandma did, with a little oil on the stove top in a kettle. I once bought a popper, but had to throw it away, the taste of the non stick chemicals was bleeding into my popcorn. After awhile I found a silicone popcorn bowl on Amazon. Now making popcorn at home is just as easy as a bag of microwave popcorn, but healthier because I know exactly what’s in it.
The way I make my pop…
Typically I pop 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels
I use a reusable silicone microwave popper
Pop for about 2 minutes 30 seconds, or until popping slows to about 1 pop in 1-2 seconds
Top with 1- 1.5 tablespoons of melted coconut oil. Butter, or oil of your choice is also an option.
While frequently mixing/ tossing
Add sea salt to taste
Add additional toppers to taste.
In three minutes you have a healthier, homemade snack, that is always a hit.
- My current favorite topper is Everything bagel seasoning (Trader Joe’s brand). I don’t even miss the butter when I use it because there’s so much flavor.
- Grated Parmesan cheese
- Garlic powder or salt
- Go spicy by adding a little chili powder. I have a chili lime combo at home.
- For something sweet and salty use a touch of sea salt and a touch of sugar
- Mix in your other favorite snacks and make a mix, such as Gardettos, and or nuts. Trust me on the gardetto popcorn combo, it pairs nicely with a cold beer.
Tip: I like to make a lot of popcorn. This way I have extra that I can keep ready to go for a quick salty snack. It keeps me from grabbing chips or raiding the cabinets for chocolate chips.
Enjoy your pop! I’m in no way a great cook but will try to share some of the very easy, and healthier snacks and meals we use in our house. Over the years we have slowly substituted cleaner foods for some of the less than healthy foods in our house. Slowly but surely we all can eat a little cleaner without feeling like we’ve sacrificed our whole diet of foods we love, or our lifestyle.
